Che Guevara; Life, Lucky Dube

The Che theme was inspired - by iafrica.com's Monday Phenomenon newsletter.

Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara de la Serna was born in Argentina on 14 June 1928. Guevara enrolled at the University of Buenos Aires in 1948 to study medicine. In 1951 he interrupted his studies and took a year off to travel across South America - (the subject of a film recently 'Motorcycle Diaries'). This journey ended up shaping his beliefs, Guevara witnessed widespread poverty and oppression. He was influenced by Marxist literature and concluded that an armed revolution was the only solution. It was during this time that his ideal of a borderless, united Ibero-America began to take shape.

After finishing his studies, Guevara went to Guatemala, where he befriended Cuban exiles 'the 26th of July Movement' linked to Fidel Castro. It was during this period that Guevara acquired his nickname ‘Che’, as a result of his frequent use of the Argentine interjection which translates loosely as ‘hey’ or ‘pal’.

In July 1955, Guevara was introduced to Fidel Castro who had just been released from prison in Cuba. Che was immediately convinced that he had met his revolutionary leader, Guevara joined the 26th of July Movement aimed at toppling the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.

In March 1965 Guevara suddenly disappeared from political life in Cuba. He and Castro had decided that he would lead Cuba’s first military action in sub-Saharan Africa. The operation was carried out in support of the pro-Patrice Lumumba Marxist movement in the Congo-Kinshasa. He collaborated with the guerilla leader Laurent-Desire Kabila, but his attempts at a guerilla-led revolution failed. This was in part because South African mercenaries and Cuban exiles worked with the Congolese army to foil Guevara by cutting off his supply lines and monitoring his communications.

Over the years he has become a symbol of resistance and to my surprise recently at an anti-war rally here in Glasgow, I overheard a young Moslem teenager asking his friend who the hell is he??? I couldn't resist sharing some of Che's background with him - I hope it meant something to him . . . that is the kind of symbol Che has become - t-shirts / flags / posters etc., - quite a legacy . . .

He had a ruthless reputation dealing with people whom he believed to be traitors and or of a different political persuasion and whilst he was in charge of the national prison was said to have been personally responsible for give the order for 100's of prisoners to be executed - without trial.

Just heard the breaking news on CapeTalk that Lucky Dube has been killed - apparently they tried to hijack his car and shot and killed him in the process . . .

Spent the weekend at Judi's - June has finally had her baby - Joshua - phew! at last . . . . and Judi came down with a bug and was really really ill over the weekend - and in fact she is still ill and guess what I am just starting to feel like I am coming down with flu - so Yippee! I may have picked up the bug myself . . .

So I received my final mark for my dissertation 65% and this gives me overall MSc with merit . . .so this was the final final mark that was still outstanding . . . so I can now say although I was fairly confident that I had passed . . its nice to have it confirmed . . . officially . . . so on 29 October - I bend the knee - some geezer hits me on the head with a cap and hands me a scroll of paper - which is my passport to success . . . . That's how it supposed to work is it not . . .lol.

Jobwise - still searching- sent off a an application recently that comes close to my list of prerequisites . . . involves a web site which covers football . . . .

Picked up a large screen TV for my Mum - a bargain - via Martin Lewis money saving expert website - well I subscribe to his newsletter - what did I find - LCD 37 inch TV - a bargain . . . and good quality . . . I am tempted myself . . . a luxury I know.

I am afraid I can feel my energy level draining . . . so will have to finish off for the time being . . . may add or put up additional posting . . .With regards to the RWC - Springboks 24 - England 16 . . . hope to be going to the pub with Phil from uni an England supporter - balance things out . . . we've been texting each other throughout the tournament - had some good banter going there . . . . so this is basically the culmination of the whole tournament - seeing as I predicted France and Argentina in the final - you'll not be putting much stock in my score then . . . perhaps I should change the score then to make sure it is the other way round . . . lol

Lastly Georgia on my mind . . . Scotland 0 - Georgia 2 . . . this weekend see's the big football derby Rangers & Celtic - similar in stature to Man U & City / Liverpool & Everton / etc., - Football is the national sport - up there with Golf - which is revered here.

all started in article Road warriors are coming from the heart by Emily Bouchard got-heart.org

What is all about - in a nutshell - people who believe they can make a difference - and take to the road to try and do so . . . hence the name Road Warriors.

The Dancing Man

This kind of sums up how I feel - no words needed after finishing (I am assuming successfully) my Masters course and dissertation . . . . . lol

Dumbarton Rd; Chair; Bed; Travel; Dissertation;

Well it was the week of toothache . . . eventually managed to get a emergency appointment . . and really felt that I was butchered . . . last Wed 14h05 walked in - first question was which tooth was giving you the problem - a logical question - I didn't have a definitive answer - so we took an x-ray and then he blew air in amongst my teeth - well the very first one it was OUCH! that's him - he then told me there was nothing wrong with my crown - I'm like OK - and then he told me I had had root treatment on my crown - do we see a pattern here . . I told him I had had extensive root canal work on my crown . . . so he had to take a filling out to get a look at what was going on but first he gave me about 4 injections - felt way too much - I was still shaking when I left and you know how you feel your face is all swollen well mine was . . . he took out my filling and then drilled some of the tooth away and put in a new filling - now all my other teeth feel quite smooth - this one feels like a gravel road if you know what I mean - feels very rough - almost like it was an emergency appointment - wait a minute - it was - Hmmm maybe - but I'm not convinced - I must say he kept up a running commentary - apart from that he had a couple of aerial pictures on the ceiling so at least I had something to look at - I think they should have flat screen TV's flat on the ceiling - but hey! What do I know . . lol - Anyway I have another appointment on Wed - with both my dentist and oral hygienist . .

So what have I been up to - well had to use some whisky again as local anaesthetic again - damn that is me run out now - seeing as I don''t pay for medicine at moment - you think I could go to off-lic and get a bottle for medicinal purposes - No??? Hmmm.

T'otherwise been a quiet week really - Judi was on week's leave - still suffering with yon eye infection apart from that she just had a lazy week - hanging out with the boys - taking the boys to the airport - lol . . . 2 sons left the country - No, they're coming back . . . .

Me watching a bit The Wire still - finished Harry Potter - a bit drawn out really and didn't think the 19 years later part was necessary . . . I think your own imagination is better in that regard - perhaps she done because she had made that decision that there would be no more 'arry Potter's??? Not sure.

Still in limbo with PhD - had preliminary discussions with paisley and I am very excited about undertaking the studentship - Games-based learning is something I think I could really get into . . .looking forward to starting . . . but need to complete my dissertation first . . . how is it going your thinking - still loads to do - more or less finalised criteria and thus far worked through all the tutorials for each environment - now need to move over to evaluating each one against the rest of the criteria. I have a number of programs and want to introduce faults into the programs and see how each environment deals with it - error messages it generates whilst writing it and then debugging and how that works - still on schedule but time is running out . . . next 2 weeks crucial.

Friday night went through to my Mum and we had a good couple of drinks not been seeing much of her lately - work; travel; Edinburgh; etc., - anyway good catch up and a good blether - we hit Dumbarton Road all the charity shops working our way along - Maureen my sister came along and she was looking for toys for her 2 grandchildren coming out soon - me just looking - cut a long story short my Mum getting on in years has been struggling to get up / out of chairs recently and we had told her (Maureen and I) she needs one of yon lazy boys - why not? One of the chairs with remote - where you can stretch out but it also tips forward to throw you out - no well help you out of the chair. So we spy ed one - well Maureen did and I led the charge and my Mum bought it - then on the way out a bed caught my eye and it was one of yon electric beds - so you can sit up to read etc., and she bought that as well . . . shop assistants were calling her the Bionic woman before she left - one guy said all you need is a power cut now . . . lol - so that was Saturday and as you know today Sunday has been a bit miserable - but I don't really mind as it fine for me when I am working as it is somehow easier when it is cold wet and overcast - it is murder sometimes when it is lovely weather and you are stuck inside typing away trying to be creative with words when it would be nice to be strolling along the waterfront or somewhere in the sun . . . .lol

Another snippet of information - might be off to New York next month . . . still need to do my research - flight prices / accommodation etc.,

Photo's - Czech Republic: Prague - Lenin Marx Engels photo by Radim Beznoska - the three liars - celebrating independence from Russian domination. Monthly wages in Zimbabwe - money but its worthless . . . just Germany after world war 2 . . . Iraq wins; Toothache; Judi's Birthday; Barcelona; Dissertation

So the fairy tale finish to the Asian Cup would have been for Iraq to have won and what happened . . . . they won . . .Good Luck & Congratulations to them! More celebratory pictures

The awesome waves are surfing in Cape Town . . . pictures of Iraq celebration & Cape Town courtesy of Guardian - cartoons of Le Tour - Zapiro from Mail & Guardian South Africa.

OK so where are we since last week - well the first thing that springs to mind . . .can't think why is this toothache I have at the moment . . . . I have a dentist and the oral hygienist appointment for next week - but I had had toothache off and on and decided to get an emergency appointment as well . . . . seeing as I am unemployed student at the moment - it is free - thank goodness - well went in this afternoon and
his first question is right which tooth is it? I'm like right don't worry step aside I know exactly which tooth it is I placed this dye on it last time it was aching . . . . i.e. I don't have a clue - Monday night - it was so bad I couldn't even concentrate - could hardly speak to Judi - was in so much pain - all I can say is thank the Lord for whiskey - as I used that as a local anaesthetic and it eventually worked - - - Yes, before I passed out . . . lol . . . well - I could not specify exactly which tooth he worked on the one that reacted to air being blown on it . . . . now I have so much toothache I'm not sure we addressed the correct tooth . . . thank goodness I kept my appointment for next week Wednesday - hopefully we can sort out these teeth because -there is only so much whiskey a man should have to drink for medicinal purposes - seeing as I only had Malt whiskey that is what I used . . . . . It is funny - when your healthy and fine you don't spare a thought and when something is wrong - how it changes your life - how unpleasant things can be . . . you don't realise what it is to be healthy - you just take it for granted and something as simple as toothache - shows you - how helpless / what a difference it makes when you are healthy . . .

Well last Saturday went through to Judi's - we had the Barcelona vs Hearts game on Saturday - I had worked at Loch Lomond Folk Festival as a steward on the Friday and had said I wasn't coming through until Saturday - I am a glorified parking attendant really - tell people where they can and can't park - where caravans can go etc., - actually beginning to get to know some of the characters involved - Wilma & Campbell; Andy; etc., as well as some of the guests that turn up regularly every year - people recognised me I recognised them - for some it was their 4th or 5th year for me it was my 4th year in a row . . . and I intend being back there next year . . . .

I had my right hand side mirror removed from my car Friday evening - the other one had been trashed a number of months ago - this time it was almost professionally removed almost as if to order . . . .???? I was on the phone to Judi on Friday evening and I said to her - " the natives are restless tonight, I don't think I'll even put my head up and peer at them over the top of the couch, they might just put another brick through the front window. . . ." - little did I know they were removing my side mirror as we spoke . . . my car is know un-roadworthy and I could be fined in its current situation . . . my Mum is very keen for me to move out of this area . . .

On to Barcelona / Hearts game - 'not worth expanding upon' . . . . I really think of Barcelona as one of the teams in European football . . . and players like Ronaldinho; Eto; Messi; Thuram; Guti etc., have always meant so much to me . . . so I was more than excited to see them play . . . the opposition in this game meant nothing to me . . .there were many Hearts supporters there - the first half was the highlight as the second half had so many changes - we did get to see Henry - and he made a good goal by laying off the ball . . . but the level of football 2nd half was not as good as the first half . . . I enjoyed the experience . . .

It was Judi's Birthday on Sunday - I had already taken her to Rome on her Birthday but sent her some flowers for the actual day . . . . in the evening it had been decided that we would go for dinner and if any of the boys wanted to come along they were more than welcome . . . turned out all four of her sons; Andy; Pete; Mike & Tom all came along and Naz, Mike's girlfriend, came along as well . . . Now between you & I - I had never met Tom yet - and there was some issues there (not from my side) - so I was more than curious as to how it might go . . . . nothing to worry about - it all went fine - met Tom we shook hands and that was about it . . . . . we had a very pleasant evening . . .it was special for Juid as she has not seen all 4 her boys together for quite some time - so she was pleased and ended up footing the bill - so the boys were pleased . . . .lol.

So what's up? I am still plodding away with my dissertation. Hence the BlueJ welcome screen . . . one of the IDEs I am looking at . . . what with toothache and all - been a bit difficult to get going sometimes . . . but still more or less on target - need to cut down and precise my work more . . .

I have receive another PhD rejection slip which I don't think I mentioned - Loubourgh Uni - that leaves 2 - Paisley with whom I had the interview last week and Glamorgan - whom I haven't heard from at all, yet . . . If Paisley is successful - I have decided to move to within walking distance from the uni as this is a 3 year commitment . . .I will probably have to go private for this . . . but location is important here.

So they say lightning never strikes in the same place twice ???

Morally abhorrent - but the UK Govt. knew about these renditions - who is fooling who ???

Lastly - if you remember my link to 'The Wire' TV series - courtesy of the Guardian - I've been watching and really enjoying some of the rest of the episodes - using Bit Torrent - downloading the episodes and watching them . . . . then it turned out it was in a format I did not have a player for MCV - needed to download a player as well - very impressed with the quality though - downloads very slow though . . . . but hey! when you dealing with a busy man . . . not a problem. Main sources torrentspy.com and of course other sites like . . . . www.mininova.com

All for now folks . . . .

Dissertation; London; Photo's; Tour de France

my project proposal for my dissertation
Photo's - My Project Plan - rest devoted to Tour de France - 1)Fabian Cancellera - overall leader Yellow jersey; 2) David Millar - King of the Mountains (top with measles) 3) Robbie McEwan wins stage 4) peleton Goldhurst hill 5) Rochester Pipe Band - courtesy of Le Guardian & a cartoon of Brown who apparently wants to scupper the super casino blueprint . . .cartoon by Steve Bell

Let's start of with my project plan - this is my dissertation blueprint - and if you have a good look you'll see - I hit a milestone today - Literature Review and I am pleased to say I am more or less on target . . .Aha! your saying what the hell does that mean either you are or your not - I am!

Brown makes noises about not being keen on super casino ideaWhat I've decided to do is to stretch my literature review across 2 chapters - 1st one being more general and the 2nd being specifically concentrating on IDE's and there own story - not sure may find there is a lot of overlap and end up with one big lit review chapter - my supervisor and myself will consider once we have it in some semblance of order . . .have to wait and see in the interim - I am very pleased to be more or less on target.

The approach I have followed is sort of a reductionist approach - there is so much to cover so keep trying to break it down into ever smaller parts - still not sure the sequence / flow is entirely correct and my criteria needs more work . . . brilliant article by Hristova on the generic errors / misconceptions students make in Java programming anyway . .I'll keep you posted . .

Fabian Cancellara - in the overall lead at this stageExtensive research - reading reading reading . . . . . read it a number of times - so often you basically know the article when you open it up . . . . this introduces you to the subject - take snippets as you go along . . . . eventually - independently you decide what your chapter should look like - slot what you have into the various categories - my chapter skeleton / outline - then takes shape - and its a matter of classifying everything into one of the identified sections within a chapter. Well that's how I am approaching it at the moment.

I realise now there is just no way I would have been able to cope with the O2 job and still keep on track with my dissertation . . .sad but true - I know I waste time but you can't just work all the time . . .

The Tour de France peleton climbs Goldhurst hillAnyway off to London this weekend - what did I say you can't just work all the time . . . lol - pushing it a bit - I am taking my notebook and will be working - yes, working whilst down in London - I will lose some time travelling but don't foresee a problem - might be different story last day before I hand in - OH woe is me why did I travel to London - as I say I am on target and have another weekend in August planned as well. Judi is attending a 3 day acupuncture workshop in London - so this is why we are really going down - I'm sort of tagging along and intend (as I said) working - although Sam & I will be out shopping on Sunday whilst Judi is on course - then we plan to have a celebratory barbecue as Sam (my daughter) has just bought a house in Ealing, London - (will save all those mad searches on the Internet for hotels . .lol) so willing be looking forward to seeing her and the house and Hud (her boyfriend) - now Judi no doubt will want my body in the evenings - to stick needles in to me that is - except she doesn't need needles - skilled in the martial arts - she'll be poking her fingers into me no doubt . . . there is only so much a man can take . . .

Robbie McEwan wins stageWhat else on the go . . . was reading an article describing 'The Political Brain by Drew Westen' For this is no partisan rant of the Michael Moore variety. Westen is a professor of psychology and psychiatry with a specialist's grasp of the science of the mind, not least the cognitive processes by which people absorb information. Through clear, repeatable experiments, rather than focus group hunch or vox pop anecdote, he establishes that "the political brain is an emotional brain". Voters make up their minds not by weighing the competing claims of different parties and deciding which best suits their interests, but by how they feel. They are not "desiccated calculating machines", as Nye Bevan famously cast Hugh Gaitskell, rationally estimating the likely utility for themselves or society by choosing policy A over policy B. Instead, they think with their guts.

peleton rides through Rochester - with the Rochester Pipe Band piping them on their wayWesten's evidence comes from his measuring of the brain activity of people assessing political information. The circuits that are activated are not those associated with logical reasoning but those that regulate emotion. Nor is this confined to the politically unaware or under-educated. Research shows that smart people think with their guts as much as anyone else.

It means that when politicians speak, they trigger a neural network of associations, positive or negative, and these associations owe more to emotion than reason. Indeed, some of these are all but hardwired, the product of thousands of years of evolution. The trick for politicians is to ensure they tap into the positive while associating their opponents with the negative.

More worrying still, Brown could easily be a British version of the Gore of 2000: in command of the facts, correct on all the big strategic questions, yet awkward with people and dull to listen to on TV. Meanwhile, Cameron maps easily on to Bush - a son of great privilege, born with a silver spoon, yet somehow able to present himself as an affable, regular guy.

Well that is probably not everyone's cup of tea . . . . hmmm!

Some photo's I took during the week - prepare yourself for some London photo's next week - might capture those prodding fingers . . .lol

Glasgow; Brown nee Blair; Uni Results; Milngavie; Interview ??

Well finally the marks are available - I did not do too well with my Artificial Intelligence . . . but I managed to pass . . . both happy and disappointed - I knew once I had permission to continue that I had to have passed everything but still its nice to see how you have done . . .

Well Glasgow featured in the News around the globe - I am not even going to go there as it has been well covered by everyone and everything that calls itself media . . . I was quite amused by American channels of Glasgow - sounds like I am staying in quite an exotic place . . as was Gordon Browns pronunciation of 'Al Qaeda' sounded a lot more exotic as well . . . When I passed through Queen street station there was a much higher level of security than there has been for a long time . . .

I am totally exhausted - been searching for hotels in London - I think I know the above map of by heart - Judi going down for a 3 day seminar asked me if I wanted to come along - nice opportunity to see Sam as well . . . we booked a hotel on line but it came back fully booked - I eventually done so last night after about 3 and half hours of searching and drawing up a short list - checking map -checking tube map etc., What an absolute nightmare - they try and confuse with lower prices then suddenly when you book its a completely different price - some hide it by charging per person as opposed to a room which sleeps 2 etc., - with breakfast / without - shared bathroom - exclusive bathroom on and on and on . . . . I was so fed up after the hotel which ended up at the top of my list they came back today to say unavailable - then I nearly just booked for the next place on my list and suddenly came across half a dozen reviews which basically said they had to sleep with their clothes on it was that bad - it has a dodgy nightclub on the premises and etc., etc., - thank goodness - nothing worse than being stuck in some dump - Yes, everything is a trade off but if an extra £20 gets you into a half decent place -in my opinion it is money well spent - but hey! that's just me . . . were did I finally book Tavistock hotel - Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9EU they even threw in a free 3 course meal - a done deal and by this time I just wanted to sort it . . .

I spent most of today when I woke up (eventually - after my search - lol) being interviewed by the Council - some job evaluation initiative and I said OK - I was even keener when Iw as told naturally I would be paid for my time . . . What a disaster in the beginning . . . Alan my sort of line manager turned up and we were both there by about 13h25 - supposed to start 13h30 - well by 14h00 we sarted to wonder what was happening - then after a few phone calls turns out they are in Dalmuir @ Concord there ?? anyway the finally arrived at 14h35 - I'm smiling and not at all perturbed by all this - because I'm getting paid for my time so they can take as long as they want. So then they pull out a form and ask me for my completed questionnaire - to which I just raise my eyebrows - 'What questionnaire?' I ask - the one you were supposed to fill in - I can see them watching me for reaction as if I must have got it but perhaps just forgot about it temporarily . . . but if they prompt me sufficiently I will pull it out of my pocket . . . I tell them I know nothing about one and that I was not given one to fill in . . . this worries them and a mumbled conversation takes place as if I no longer exist - I am discussed in third person - and I can see they are not happy - I tell them I was given a few categories to prepare on but nothing more - I read them out the categories - one of them asks to see my list - I refuse - which obviously doesn't happen often - as I can see the shock on his face - I tell him that it is my personal notes on those topics . . . - they then change tack and tell me that I would be within my rights to refuse to continue with the interview on the grounds of xy & z - I say no I am quite happy to continue - Hey, I'm prepared to do it on the fly - now they are confused and clearly want to pack up - but can see I want to continue - they now claim it's up to control (I have visions of mission control somewhere) to decide whether they can continue - I can hear the hope in their voices that they will get the go ahead to just can the whole thing - time is dragging on - only person happy is me - more time - I'm getting paid by the hour here - take as long as you like guys - I am willing to co-operate - eventually mission control gives the go ahead . . . They are both disappointed - they exchange glances - an invisible let's this over asap passes between them. You should have seen the look on their faces when I told them my normal hours of work are 2 and a half hours a week - one guy nearly chokes . . . it turns out to be a computer based questionnaire which covers all the areas supposed to have been completed by me - they still want that - I can fill it in and forward to them later . . . it actually runs quite smoothly hereafter . . . the whole exercise took 3 and a half hours - so if you have ever wondered where your hard earned council tax goes - it goes on worthy causes like myself - we were 4 people in total involved for this period of time - I am glad our taxes are gainfully employed . . . .

Last bit of action today - took a drive through to Milngavie - as Belinda Ross form South Africa was there - she works with Jessila (my ex) and I want to get the tops to Arran for his birthday - couldn't post them so had to manifest Belinda to take them . I drove through arrive at Premier Travel Inn - announce myself at reception - they ask what room number ??? I'm not sure what they mean - one of those days?? Anyway once they realise I am not a guest or checking in - I am told to wait - then after the compulsory 2 minutes I am asked again if I am checking in??? I explain that I ma just dropping something off for someone - OK what room are they in? I tell tehm I don't know - raised eyebrows ?? I give them the name - more confusion they have 2 people with that name - I explain this person is from South Africa - raised eyebrows ?? That's funny because they have one an elderly lady from Milngavie or a younger one form Australia - must be her then I say. Australia ??? They then shock me by just giving me the room number - I would have thought they would call her to reception - so I march down the hall to room 21 - chap on the door - no answer - try again - no answer - back to reception - explain what is happening - hang a round a bit - eventually decide I'll try my luck and leave the parcel at reception - thinking No way - especially after Glasgow and heightened security that they will entertain this idea - anyway I ask 'aye, nae bother' - end of story - mission accomplished - I left it - eventually managed to get Belinda's phone number - she sounds quite the bubbly character - perhaps she has been drinking some bubbly??? Anyway Arran will have his gear for his birthday 15 July . . . . Oh and by the way she is booked in room 22 not 21 ????

I am off to my bed - can't keep my eyes open . . .

Blackness; A week of deadlines - DUS; MedioPlus; Java;

Well its another week and as promised here are a few Blackness photo's - OK technically they were not taken this week - don't tell anyone though . . . went for a walk with Mandy, Zack (our canine friend - a wee bit overweight - so he needed the walk - I can't talk) Judi & I - was a lovely neck of the woods - don't know it so it was a novel experience for me. Photo's: above me the famous Blackness Castle; Blackness the village & Marina; Judi after the walk; lovely colour from the flowers; looking out across to the Forth Road & Railway bridge; a tree trunk in the woods; Blackness Castle through the trees (as seen from the other side); my walk mates leading the way (me & my camera - continually stopping to click here and there) - A solitary tree that caught our eye.

Well its another week behind me - the end of the semester fast approaches - its been a hard week - 1 research paper - 2 presentations & 1 practical assignment with detailed report - I thought the report was a formality with the focus being on the code - but then I reread the spec - guess what it says a brief description of your program 10 pages I nearly died . . .on the spot . . .so bottom-line I never got the program to work - I think I was close - I know your saying a miss is as good as a mile . . .but I'm getting ahead of myself - that all happened on Friday - lets get back to last weekend . . .
Well Judi and I had discussed things and decided, realistically I had far too much work for us to see each other last weekend - she would end up feeling guilty and God forbid I didn't make any of my deadlines . . . a treacherous slope and easy to say its fine I'll manage . . . in retrospect as much as I didn't like it it was the correct decision - there is just no way I would ahve been able to cope - I worked last week solid - I was off the whole week - went in once for a meeting and that was it . . .

Anyway this week kicked off with AI on Monday - it was revision class and shhh! but some of it is actually making sense - I think if I now took the course again it would all fall into place - sadly that will not happen and my exam is on May 2nd - next weekend is looking more and more like another weekend where Judi & I will only see each other briefly . . . . Monday afternoon met with my e-Commerce team mates - they all showed up this time and I was able to share with them what my vision was and the presentation . . . all in prep for our initial presentaion for Tuesday . . . I nearly fainted when Murvin told me he had not started his DUS research papaer which had to be handed in the next day . . .I told him I had been working on it solid for a week and the formatting alone had taken me 1/2 a day - so I wished him good luck.

Tuesday morning - after a long night preparing the said research paper for hand-in was the launch of MedioPlus - our e-Commerce online music / tv / film / sporting & corporate and special events company - presentation was not flawless - but went down well . . . basically need some more work - everyone presented and all involved - meeting Monday next week to finalise material for hand in on Tuesday and sort out presentation . . . . Afternoon went well - was a wee bit nervous and at last minute PowerPoint played up on Mac . . .some of the slides images went a weird blue colour instead of white . . . . Murvin did not make it and by Friday was still working on it and had not handed in . . . we were given a mark out of 18 for research paper & out of 7 for presentation . . . Murvin did not do either so must have lost the 7 marks already . . .Oh well each to their own . . .

I was totally exhausted and knew I still had to finish my prgramming and write my report for Friday moring hand-in . . . couldn't work Tuesday evening - I contacted Murv and asked if he would help me on Thursday with program - he agreed and it was Wednesady evening before I was able to start report - to cut a long story short finished report Friday morning 10h30 and handed in - as I was saying code does not work but most of it is there - justhope what is there and my report pull me through.

Wednesday was just AI and Peter turned up with model answers - which sometimes left me more confused . . . that's AI for you - I did ask manay a question and received many an answer - sometimes when you don't know enough you can't ask meaningful questions . . .

Anyway - next week - have e-Commerce final presntation and hand-in portfolio which documents each week and how idea developed . . . Friday - presentation for Research Methodology + Essay and inbetween study for AI exam - hope to answer an old AI exam paper and hand it in for marking . . .

That was the week that was my life . . . - Judi here for the weekend - thank goodness . . . . lol - I missed her. . . .

Philip K's Java Lunar adventures-kinda not!

Howdy - just a quick word on the eclectic mix of photo's book covers etc., - Lunar eclipse and some Philip K Dick photo's - yes that is his gravestone and no it does not say here lies a dick - although a quick glance gives one that impression, perhaps - the rest was all about Artificial Intelligence and picked up my text book image and a range of other odds and ends . . .

Lunar eclipse on 3 March

just an advance warning! Who knows what may happen . . . lol - photo courtesy of NASA - see link above - all the technical jargon - just hope for clear skies.

Other thing of interest in the interim - today 2 March is the day 25 years ago that the switched off Philip K Dick's life support system - a prolific science fiction author - whom I have not read enough of - a very interesting and paranoia person - seemed to be able to see far beyond his own time - died a pauper - and yet wrote some of best sci-fi seldom surpassed even today.

What else - will pick up as per normal later today - being punished for something - so will have plenty of time tonight to write blog . . . lol

Must mention all hell breaking loose in Barrwoodhill - communications / music system / someone seems to have zapped my flat - everything that can go wrong is going wrong - at the moment my cd player is playing up - telephone gave up on Wednesday evening - I left my mobile on train - it cuts out every 15 minutes or so . . . so roll on the lunar eclipse maybe it will be back to normal after that . . .lol

Well I am suddenly quite taken with writing as in pen to paper - sitting in Queen Street station now awaiting my train home - so I thought I'll use the time and write my blog - which I am now typing up . . . I think this writing thing has something to do with problems (logic problems) that I have been forced to use pen and paper to solve - I actually have a white board and I need to buy some marker pens because it would probably work just as well if not better as you can stand back and look at it and see if it makes sense - so this new found like, in my opinion, is somehow linked to this . . . so I am capturing my thoughts as I go along (which is shorthand for I'm making this up as I go along). Anyway uni week has now finished - I was assessed on my Java practical this morning - (I think I described it for you last week) - Bottom line spent most of last night worrying / trying to work out how to sort a LinkedList - only to discover that I was looking at the wrong sort algorithm - I was doing a BubbleSort instead of a MergeSort - how did that happen - I think it may have something to do with me paying scant regard to the specs . . .and basically doing my own thing . . . lol. SO I arrived frustrated at the lab this morning - coffee in hand complaining bitterly that I couldn't get this damn thing to work - cut a long story short - Chris, God bless him, helped me sort it - I had the other 80% running and had tested it and it was working fine - it should be Colin (my Java instructor) and I had spent almost 2 hours the day before going through everything - changing / testing / changing again etc., - just to ensure all the methods were actually working - he didn't write it all - he left me during the course of the day and I sorted out a few things and we carried on again. The thing about Colin (a Natural teacher - they are far and few between - ask me that is my line of business) he writes / thinks code at your level - and also is flexible / knowledgeable to adjust to your understanding. For example I had written my LinkedList code with a header and also used a tail and then added a addTail() method - which really means anything you add will to the end (tail) of your list - So if your input is 1, 2, 3 - the order the programme will print it out for you is 1,2, 3 - Amazing (I can hear you say - a 1 year course to teach him this!) but the difference is if you add to the beginning of the list every time - and you then printed it out you would get 3, 2, 1 . . . . . make sense. Now here is the code - to do exactly that i.e. add everything to the end of the list . . . . which is easy enough - basically whatever your input, create a new Node (which will store whatever it is you put in) and just bung it in at the back of the list . . all we have to be careful of is an initial state where the List is empty . . . as head pointer would then point to the single element this new Node tail

public void addTail(Object o)
{
Node n = new Node(o,null);
if (isEmpty())
{
head = n;
tail = n;
}
else
{
tail.setNext(n);
tail = n;
}
elementCount++;
}

When it came to our assessment - guy came to me - straight after Chris (whom I was sitting next to and asked if I was ready - remember at this stage my mergeSort method had not been written . . . so I am like "Erm - not yet" - so he moved on . . . & Chris and I finished off
code - which from memory is something like this:
public void mergeSort (List input, List one, List two)
{
List sortTemp1 = new JLinkList;
List sortTemp2 = new JLinkList;

if(input.listSize() <= 0) { return input; } if (sortTemp1.listSize() <=0) { return sortTemp2;
}
if(sortTemp2.listSize() <=0) { return sortTemp1;
}
merge(mergeSort()(sortTemp1, sortTemp2);
return returnList;
}

I'll check - not sure about the last statement - but that is it I think. Anyway about 15 minutes later I beckoned the assessor across - he got me to explain how that method worked asked me to demonstrate - and explain some other choices and then deducted a point because mergeSort did not have an explanation - so it did stick out a bit - he said it looked as if it was something that had just quickly been added on - in all fairness I explained that I had been working on the incorrect algorithm and that I had just added it that morning. Noting happens by accident - I had been working furiously away the day before and he had come up to me and asked me how it was going - I actually didn't recognise him and wondered if he thought I was part of some other lab then it dawned on me who he was and that he had been referring to the Java . . . so we had a brief chat and he asked me why I was using an enumerator an a couple of other questions and made a few suggestions then he was off . . . I saw him looking for the enumerator and checking some of what he had seen the day before - most of which was either gone or streamlined - so let me tell you nothing happens by accident - there are no coincidences.

Lord Linlithgow raved on as usual - on both Thursday and Friday - he had originally meant to finish today (Friday 2 March) - if he carries on like this he will be lecturing deep into June sometime (classes officially finish end of April) - although many may finish prior to Easter - leaving students with assignments and them some time to recuperate after another semester and before all the marking and paperwork starts again. He really does ramble on at times - a very nice chap - he always has a few boxes of transparencies - and they must be in the correct order - he is meticulous about this - albeit (my fav word at moment) we are being given a mixture of 2nd and 3rd year plus some original material . . . so it might be a slide from this box followed by 1 from that box and then another from the box over there - so you can imagine an administrative nightmare but Lord Lithy is up for it - it looks to me as if they each have their own special backing sheet as well as many a lecture has ground to a halt as he sorts out one box or another or realises that the slide that he needs is not in any of the three boxes that he has with him and he runs off to fetch box number 4 . . . which naturally adds to his dilemma . . .lol. He actually had some overlays i.e. pictures on 3 different slides which you put up and then the story develops with each new slide - kind of like animation - quite impressive really compared to plain hand written text on a slide - nay revolutionary I say - if only he got the full slide on the screen - the projector too far away from the screen so about 75% is now on the screen (I got their early and moved the table) but it most annoying when you cant see what is being referred to . . .

We were given the topics for our BIG Java project - Lord Lithy was at lengths to tell us there are 3 we can choose from and then shared 5 with us - but I think that was a misunderstanding - I am interested in the Spell checker - it will work with the practical we have just finished and should work if I understand the concept similar to your mobile phone predictive text in that the programme should recognise any word but also allow you to add words to the dictionary . . . seems interesting and initial problem will be creating the dictionary.

We never had anything to hand in for DUS (Designing Usable Systems) . . . but we have double to hand in next week - 4 separate things to be handed in and we are how many in team - right so that should be 1 thing each . . . My chances of doing a research paper on M-Learning now seems remote as we have suddenly changed how the topics are allocated - it was going to be each individuals choose what they want to do and then groups would be formed around choices . . .whereas now all of a sudden it is all about the existing groups deciding amongst themselves what they want to do - we each have a vote and we are 4 members - Murv already expressed an interest in web browsing on mobile devices which leaves David & Nicole - Nicole said she had made a choice and I lost count of how many times David asked her - eight times at least but she was saying nothing ???? so I don't know what that means but as I say looks remote chance now. I need to look at the other topics to see (as Michelle suggested) whether or not I ma able to stretch things to include M-Learning just
within a different context.

Beginning to realise how much work this DUS subject is - every week (barring this week) something to hand in - you have to keep a scrap book as well - plus rate / mark the people in your own group every week. Your research paper - at least 4 pages and a 15 minute lecture / presentation. Then 2 exams - 1 covering the theoretical aspects the text book and 1 covering the research topics.

AI - Artificial Intelligence kicked off with us moving on to the third topic - Planning - all about for example a robot; rooms and boxes - the robot having to perhaps move boxes around and stack them somewhere . . . It comes complete with its own language / syntax i.e.
(at ?r ?b1) which would tell you the robot was at box 1 - of course r and b1 - have to be defined so that everyone knows what each variable stands for . . .

What we have is whole lot of variables - a set of truths then a set of goals. Your job is to list a sequence of actions which will allow you to achieve your goal - each action may change your existing set of conditions / environment.
Domain
(:types object room robot)
?b1 ?b2 ?b3 - boxes;
?Rm1 ?Rm2 ?Rm3 ?Rm4 - rooms
?d1 ?d2 - doors
?r - robot

Goal - get all the boxes stacked in the following sequence ?b1 ?b3 ?b2 in Rm1

You now have to work out what actions you need to take to achieve you goal

Early days but I think you'll get the idea - and can quite easily get very involved.

"...an artificial intelligence system was placed on board to plan and execute spacecraft activities. In contrast to remote control, this sophisticated set of computer programs acts as an agent of the operations team on board the remote spacecraft. Rather than have humans do the detailed planning necessary to carry out desired tasks, remote agent will formulate its own plans, using high level goals provided by the operations team....Remote agent, like the other high-risk technologies that have now been tested on DS1, promises to make space exploration of the future more productive and more exciting while staying within NASA's limited budget."

- from NASA's site about Remote Agents

Otherwise seems to have been a hell of a long week - Judi busy until tomorrow morning - so can't come over until about 12h00 - so not seeing each other until Sat afternoon - and staying overnight. I have been over to her place from a Friday and then left straight for uni on a Monday morning from her place - not really practical for Judi to do something like that - would be nice though . . ah well there's a thought.

A feast of rugby over the weekend - Scotland Vs Italy - which should logically have given only one result - still can't quite get over it - a couple of freak interceptions saw Italy leading by 24 points to 0 in the first 10 minutes. Scotland left themselves with the Italian alps to climb and whose knows them better than the Italians - they defended the high ground well and the rest is history. This after the highs for Scotland of beating both England and France . . . lost to Italy (apologies to all Italians out there). Ireland thoroughly outplayed England and will be rue last weeks results where they had France (who beat Wales on Saturday) in the bag and then in injury time allowed them to snatch victory . . . so looks like France will win the 6 nations - so far unbeaten.

Graeme, my nephew, returned to South Africa on Tuesday - we hit Nando's @ X-treme on Sunday night a chicken eating frenzy ensued - had a few Brazilian beers and a relatively good night was had by all . . .he was out mostly for my Mum's 80th - He did not particularly like the Scottish way of life and I think even although he has enjoyed his stay with his mother I think he will be glad to get back. He took some of Arran's shirts and ties back for him. Speaking of which now that I am full-time student I qualify for rebate on my council tax and you do not pay any if you live alone. SO with Arran off back to South Africa I thought - fine time for me to sort this out - sent Council a letter with a copy of Arran's ticket - would they not right back an tell me they want the following documents:
1) A copy of Arran's lease agreement in South
2) a copy of his visa
3) proof that his bank statements are being posted / sent to South Africa

they were also kind enough to point out that they would not consider my application until such time as they were in receipt of all the above documents. Strange that when I wrote to them that he had arrived they immediately adjusted my council tax - nothing needed - no documentary proof . . . .lol

Stop Press! - Dumbarton enters the 21st century - we now have a Marks & Spencer's down at the local shopping centre - albeit (there's that word again) - a smaller version . . . Oh watch out Oh Judi'est one - what culinary delights might I be conjuring up now . . . the mind boggles . . . . not to mention the waist-line . . . lol.

Anyway that was my last week - how was yours . . . . .?
PS - From What the rest of the World Knows about South Africa - forum

Q: Will I be able to speek English most places I go? (USA)

A: Yes, but you'll have to learn it first.

Q: I was in South Africa in 1969, and I want to contact the girl I dated while I was staying in Hillbrow. Can you help? (USA)

A: Yes, and you will still have to pay her by the hour.

Eddi Reader - Java - Dus

I came across a broadsheet lying in the station - it was an anarchist.org publication - what made a lasting impression on me were some of the photographs shown in the publication - they are pretty graphic - for a reason - all taken from http://www.mladenpenev.net/

Eddi Reader
Allelujah song obviously by Eddi one of my all time favourites - so lets add it in . . .

the lights on the Westway go on
a million cars hurry home
an ice cream van shuts off its tinsel bells
winter won’t be long

I see you every day
I watch as you walk down this way
we pass on the stairs of this council block
too shy to find words to say

but your smile is a prayer that prays for love
and your heart is a kite that longs to fly
allelujah here I am
let’s cut the strings tonight

so meet me on the corner at eight
let’s get out of this place
we’ll kiss the first of a million kisses
and let the past fall away

for your smile is a prayer that prays for love
and your heart is a kite that longs to fly
allelujah here I am
let’s cut the strings tonight

yes your smile is a prayer that prays for love
and your heart is a kite that longs to fly
allelujah here I am
let’s cut the strings tonight

yes your smile is a prayer that prays for love
and your heart is a kite that longs to fly
allelujah here I am
we’ll cut the strings tonight

and we’ll kiss the first of a million kisses
la-la-la-la-la-la

Well all I can say about the concert - Ooops have I not mentioned that - Judi & I went on Saturday - almost had an altercation with the white feather brigade and we entertained on the steps alongside the bar but that's all for discussion over a glass of red wine - the concert was great - I have never seen Eddi live - was a ardent fan with Fairground attraction and caught one of their concerts by chance on TV once which alerted me to the fact that she was Scottish - and then liked her even more. She has an exquisite range with her vocals (which is more than I can say for her dress sense - each to their own) - I think she got the mix of old standards up-tempo / ballads etc., just right and had everyone eating out of the palms of her hands . . . great accompaniment - although the guy who was her supporting act was roped in as a support guitarist - did not seem quite as enthusiastic as everyone else - John McCusker was superb on fiddle and an Irish accordion player outstanding as was the upright bass player - not to forget Boo Hewerdine on guitar - who has written a number of the songs. Michael, Judi's son - who obviously knows his Mum - gave her 2 tickets for Christmas. Judi is a BIG Eddi Reader fan and on a number of occasions I had to entice her down from her seat as she was standing dancing - or could that have been from the red wine and whisky . . .lol only joking - but she knew all the lyrics and lets just say the arms were going in the air . . . .

Anyway that was Saturday evening - Lazy Sunday - came home about 19h45 after bus & train - was exhausted - managed to do Designing Usable Systems - intended doing Java but couldn't keep my eyes open . . .

Monday morning - up and off to AI - it didn't get any better - I was asleep outside the classroom before I even got in - then fell asleep during the lecture - it just seemed incredible dry - couldn't quite grasp it - like information overload and mind couldn't cope - so I went to sleep - albeit (my favourite word at the moment) for a very short period of time . . . Lab was hence challenging and luckily I have now taken to attending a 2nd lab / practical period on Friday - were I could ask Peter some questions and he sat down and explained some thing is to me. Tuesday I could come up with the solution but didn't understand what it was really saying to me . . .which I know sounds a bit weird - lets look at an example - you have 3 nodes (see diagram) each one has to have a different colour assigned to it - so Nodes A, B & C - colours 1(red), 2(amber), 3(green) - so mathematically we say A could be 1 v 2 v 3 - which reads Node A must be red, amber or green - but that's no good really because all the nodes could be either colour . . .so we then tabulate for the other options if A is set to 1 i.e. then its not amber and neither is it green
written:
-1 -2 (which is kind of like saying [not not one {which means if its not not one then it must be one}] and not two . . . . . etc., all gets a wee bit confusing he says as he reaches for the whisky bottle again (I'll make shensh of theesh yet . . . .)
-1 -3
-2 -3
now the strange things is I can work all of that out . . .i.e. have no problem coming up with combo's . . .don't ask me to explain them though . . .oh the joys - the exam here is starting to worry me . . .

Next was Designing Usable systems - Tuesday afternoon's and we started off by looking at the work we were supposed to do in preparation - I originally read the wrong chapter (I read 5 instead of 4 - will make next week better . . .) but knuckled down to preparing an improved scenario . . which (against my better judgement) ended up sending to David (who is submitting this week) - we had a lengthy discussion regarding a small wheelchair icon for people who are wheelchair bound which would have a green, amber or red background (no this is not AI again) - just to show people whether or not the station / route etc was wheelchair friendly etc., . . . Last week we were awarded 8/10 for group work so hopefully David can maintain this mark - its actually supposed to be a group effort so not a solo run - only ourselves to blame if marks are not as high . . . Nothing to hand in next week as it is spread over 2 weeks with 4 components forming the report and (guess what) 4 people in the group - I'm getting an idea here ..- lol . . .so we'll each complete 1 section of work - the first truly collaborative report.

Wednesday morning went for a swim - nothing too strenuous (that had me sweating on predictive text on my mobile - but I learned as I can write it now easily - so it has its educational uses . . ) was in plenty of time for the 10h52 train (which never comes at that time- always late) which didn't arrive on time - I'm spoilt now and would in all likelihood miss it if it ever did arrive on time. Its an express train stopping only at Dumbarton East; Dalmuir skips everything and then stops from Hyndlnad onwards Partick; Charring Cross & Glasgow Queen Street (my stop)) I was early for class and I have a classroom opposite my lecture hall that is always empty which I now use as my personal waiting room - I sometimes sit there and surf the Internet as the uni has wireless access throughout . . . I actually wrote this note whilst sitting waiting (just changed its tense for the blog) - this is all on the Royal College building which was built in 1903 - and must have been quite an imposing building in its time - So it has been an educational building since its inception - Strathclyde uni was originally a college which merged with a number of others before finally becoming or being granted its uni status - this is why some people don't like it as they refer to Glasgow as the only true uni in this neck of the woods - we actually have Caledonian uni - just across the road from us and then Paisley uni another 6 or 7 miles away - so you have quite a few to choose from. The Royal College building houses mostly engineering faculties and you see some strange sights as you walk around. At the moment there are builders everywhere as they are in the process of yet again trying to morph the existing building into something else. These builders seem to appear from nowhere and are everywhere - I think this is linked to the fact that it is almost 12h00 - which is a universal lunch time - more scary are the uni staff in white lab coats which somehow in my mind (illogically) conjures up visions of a mental institution - just saw an elderly (oops just realised my tense has changed - sorry you'll have to cope with it) woman walking round with what looked like long thin test tubes - almost expected to be stopped and asked for a urine sample (sorry - no explanation) then I was nearly knocked down by another white coat pushing what I can only describe as something that looks like it was made to strap a body to it and be wheeled away for experimentation . . . lol - crazy I know . . . my AI lecture starts at 12h00 - oops which it was now time for . . . - better run - I can always tell when it is almost time for my class to start - I don't have to see the time - I can actually hear what time it is - by the activity in the hall way / passage way - the classes empty their contents into the passageways - like floodgates opening and releasing water into these canals / central channels and it is this noise which alerts me to the fact that it is time to go . . . .

AI was OK - was given a virtually unsolvable problem and asked to solve it . . . Peter was basically revising what he had covered with us over the last 3 lectures . . .

Thursday Software Construction and Lord Linlithgow had given us an introduction to trees last week which he continued and elaborated on - still struggling a bit with practical. Dealing with LinkedLists; Nodes; Mergesort etc - but not just allowed to make use of existing methods need to write our own - Practical basically have to type in a series of integers - store as objects in a LinkedList - then split this list into 2 - sort the integers (collection of objects) in numerical sequence and then merge the 2 files again back into 1 and ensure that it is in sequence still. Hope to meet with Colin on Friday morning to go over it - worked late (late) on Thursday evening - Murphy's law emailed everything to myself apart from my main file - so it was hardly worthwhile having him look at my code as a major part was missing . . . will have to see him next week during the week rather than on the Friday as we are going to be assessed on this practical . . .so need to work on this during the week . . .

And basically that was my week - did sit with Peter AI in the lab on Friday again - as I mentioned already - I now start and end my week with AI . . .

Oops nearly forgot - very chuffed with my Java GizzaPizza project for which I received 84% - Yipeee! time for celebrations! And Judi come over to my place so champers on ice and a quiet drink and a meal to celebrate the return on all the hours I put into that project - ALL of our outstanding marks should be out early next week - a number of assignments / project / exam marks still outstanding - I hope to be as happy towards the end of next week with my marks as I am this week . . .

Bye for now - keep smiling . . . .
